This Electrical Inspection Checklist: Motors and Vehicles is engineered to provide an NES compliant process to guide you in your safety inspections.

Motor vehicles are a tremendously dangerous part of society. These huge hunks of metal speed around our towns and cities, but they play a vital role in keeping our infrastructure alive. As an electrical inspector of motor vehicles of any kind, it is your responsibility to make sure the vehicle is safe for those who use it and safe for other road users and pedestrians. 

This process is editable and you can restructure elements to suit your specific need. Each task listed contains the relevant NEC section reference which applies to the action. It is recommended that you familiarize yourself with the standards before beginning any inspection

Run general inspection safety checklist

An electrical inspection is normally needed to ensure the safety of others. However, it is important to make sure that your own safety is not put at risk in performing the inspection.

Electrical Inspection Checklist

The first half of this checklist is designed to help you assess the area and risk in order to do your job safely and well. 

We recommend you run this checklist before starting any inspection.

Check ampacities and sizing are based on tables not nameplates

NEC: 430.6, 430.122, Tables 430.247 through 430.250

Make sure the ampacities, sizing of components, and overload values are based upon the NEC tables rather than the nameplate information. 

Use the form field to leave any notes.

Verify ampacities are +125% of table FLC

NEC: 430.22(A), 430.122

Make sure conductor ampacities for the individual motors are at least one hundred and twenty-five (125) percent of table FLC.

Check the conductors which supply multiple motors

NEC: 430.24, 220.14(C), 220.50 

If a conductor is supplying multiple motors, you should make sure that the ampacities are equal to or greater than the sum of the other motors or loads. 

Check the motor overload protection

NEC: 430.31 through 430.44, 430.126

Make sure the motor overload protection does not exceed permitted values. 

Check the short-circuit and ground-fault protection

NEC: 430.51 through 430.58 430.130 430.131 

Make sure the short-circuit and ground-fault protection for the motor branch circuits don't exceed the stated permitted values. 

Verify there is proper overcurrent protection

NEC: 430.71 through 430.74 

Ensure there is proper overcurrent protection in the motor control circuits.

Make sure the motor controllers are the proper type

NEC: 430.8 and 430.81 through 430.90 

Make sure proper motor controllers are provided and they have adequate ratings and short-circuit current ratings also. 

Check MCCs for proper ratings

NEC: 110.26, 430.92 through 430.98

Make sure the MCCs have proper:

  • ratings,
  • protection, 
  • workspace,
  • and dedicated space.

Check the motor disconnects

NEC: 430.109, 430.110 

Make sure the motor disconnects are the proper type and ratings.

Inspect the controller disconnects

NEC: 110.26, 430.102(A), 430.107, 404.8

Check the controller disconnects are:

  • in sight of controllers,
  • readily accessible,
  • and have adequate workspace

Inspect the motor disconnects

NEC: 110.26, 430.102(B), 430.107 

Check that the motor disconnects are:

  • in sight of motors,
  • readily accessible,
  • and have adequate workspace.

Write down overall notes regarding inspection
