{"id":6147,"date":"2023-01-25T08:00:18","date_gmt":"2023-01-25T08:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.process.st\/help\/docs\/demote-member-to-guest\/"},"modified":"2026-06-11T07:02:55","modified_gmt":"2026-06-11T07:02:55","slug":"demote-member-to-guest","status":"publish","type":"ht_kb","link":"https:\/\/www.process.st\/help\/docs\/demote-member-to-guest\/","title":{"rendered":"What Happens If I Demote a Builder To A User?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you no longer need a member of your team to have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.process.st\/help\/docs\/managing-members\/\">Builder<\/a> privileges, you can demote them to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.process.st\/help\/docs\/what-is-a-free-member\/\">User<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Admins can demote (or promote) users from the <a href=\"https:\/\/app.process.st\/organizations\/manage\/users\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Users<\/a> page.<\/p>\n<h2>What changes when you demote a Builder to a User<\/h2>\n<p>The exact effects depend on your plan. On <strong>Pro<\/strong> and <strong>Enterprise<\/strong> plans, Users keep more access than on older plans.<\/p>\n<h3>Groups<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Pro and Enterprise plans:<\/strong> All group memberships are preserved \u2014 both system groups (for example, All Members) and custom groups.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Other plans:<\/strong> The user is removed from <strong>all<\/strong> groups, including custom groups. This cannot be undone.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Workflow assignments<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Pro and Enterprise plans:<\/strong> All existing pre-assignments are preserved. Workflow permits are downgraded to <strong>Run<\/strong> access, so the user can still view and run workflows they had access to.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Other plans:<\/strong> All pre-assignments and workflow permits are deleted entirely.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Running workflows<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Pro and Enterprise plans:<\/strong> The user <strong>can<\/strong> still view and run workflows where they have Run access.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Other plans:<\/strong> The user <strong>cannot<\/strong> run workflows.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>On all plans<\/h3>\n<p>Regardless of your plan, a demoted user:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cannot create or edit workflows<\/li>\n<li>Cannot schedule workflows<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Note:<\/strong> On plans where groups and assignments are removed, these changes cannot be recovered.
