Couple this with the fact that (whilst <a href=\"http:\/\/itknowledgeexchange.techtarget.com\/storage-disaster-recovery\/on-the-quest-for-the-mysterious-source-of-the-data-loss-causes-company-failure-statistic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">some<\/a> argue on the specifics) data loss can be crippling to nay and all companies, and you have a major potential problem.<\/p>\n<p>That's why we here at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.process.st\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Process Street<\/a> created this Server Maintenance Checklist.<\/p>\n<p>By running through this bad boy every month (in combination with our other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.process.st\/it-processes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">IT processes<\/a>) you can ensure that your server remains in tip top condition whilst staying locked tight against security threats.<\/p>\n<p>Let's get started!<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"preparation\">\n<h2> Preparation: <\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"record-the-server-maintenance-checklist-details\">\n<h2> Record the server maintenance checklist details <\/h2>\n<div class=\"text-content\">\n<p>To kick off our server maintenance checklist, you must first ensure that all<strong> details of the maintenance procedure <\/strong>(and the<strong> server itself<\/strong>) are<strong> recorded<\/strong>. Remember to double check that you are saving to the correct&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rackaid.com\/blog\/selecting-a-backup-location\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">backup location.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"check-disk-usage\">\n<h2> Check disk usage <\/h2>\n<div class=\"text-content\">\n<p>Next up, you need to <strong>check your server's disk usage<\/strong>. By this, we mean that you should be getting rid of any<strong> old or outdated software<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Think of it this way; your production system shouldn't double up as an archival system. By keeping your system free of old software, you can both<strong> reduce the strain<\/strong> on your server and <strong>limit the potential for security issues<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"check-raid-alarms\">\n<h2> Check RAID alarms <\/h2>\n<div class=\"text-content\">\n<p>Now you need to perform some <strong>basic checks on your RAID alarms<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Check that your RAID\u2019s <strong>error notification system<\/strong> is configured properly and functions as expected - this is especially important as most&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Standard_RAID_levels\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">RAID levels<\/a> tolerate only a single disk failure.<\/p>\n<p>If you miss a RAID notification, a simple disk replacement could turn into a complete failure, so make sure that you thoroughly .<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"update-your-os\">\n<h2> Update your OS <\/h2>\n<div class=\"image-content\">\n<figure>\n   <a href=\"https:\/\/www.process.st\/templates\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/vXXbM15oSJ3ZFDfyiRNFrA.png\" alt=\"Update your OS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.process.st\/templates\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/vXXbM15oSJ3ZFDfyiRNFrA.png\" \/> <\/a><br \/>\n  <\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"text-content\">\n<p>You also need to make sure that your server's <strong>OS is up-to-date<\/strong> by checking for (and implementing) system updates. Whilst doing this, it's also<strong> worth noting the OS in the form field below<\/strong>, for any required later reference.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"text-field-content form-field-content\">\n<div class=\"form-group\">\n   <label> Server OS <\/label><br \/>\n   <input type=\"text\" placeholder=\"Something will be typed here...\" disabled=\"disabled\" class=\"form-control\" \/>\n  <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"text-content\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linux.com\/learn\/tutorials\/234011-linux-101-updating-your-system\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Updates for<strong> Linux<\/strong> systems<\/a> are released<strong> almost daily<\/strong> and many of these<strong> fix important security issues<\/strong>, so it is highly likely that Linux systems will need updating. Even if you regularly update your systems, be sure to check just in case.<\/p>\n<p>If you <strong>do not have a management service or auto-updates<\/strong> enabled, be sure to also <strong>review your OS<\/strong> for any <strong>critical security updates<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Get on the <strong>mailing list for your OS<\/strong> so you know when critical security patches are released.<\/p>\n<p>If you have a kernel update, you will need to reboot your server unless you use a tool&nbsp;like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rackaid.com\/resources\/ksplice-save-time\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ksplice<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"update-your-control-panel\">\n<h2> Update your control panel <\/h2>\n<div class=\"text-content\">\n<p>Make sure to <strong>update your server<\/strong> (or hosting)<strong> control panel<\/strong> as well - this one's a double-whammy, as <strong>it also updates the software it controls<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With <a href=\"http:\/\/cpanel.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">WHM\/cPanel<\/a>, you must manually update PHP versions to fix known issues. Simply updating the control panel does not also update the underlying Apache and PHP versions used by your OS.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"check-application-updates\">\n<h2> Check application updates <\/h2>\n<div class=\"text-content\">\n<p>After you have updated your server, make sure to<strong> review the web applications<\/strong> and <strong>update<\/strong> those as well. That's all there is to this step!<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"check-remote-management-tools\">\n<h2> Check remote management tools <\/h2>\n<div class=\"text-content\">\n<p>Next up in the server maintenance checklist, you need to <strong>check in on your remote management tools<\/strong> (if applicable). If you are<strong> nearing the limits<\/strong>, you may need to <strong>plan on adding resources<\/strong> to your server <strong>or migrating<\/strong> to a new one.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"review-user-accounts\">\n<h2> Review user accounts <\/h2>\n<div class=\"text-content\">\n<p>Now you need to <strong>review the user accounts<\/strong> on your server. Primarily, you should be looking for any <strong>old or outdated sites and users<\/strong> - record them in the<strong> form field<\/strong> below.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"textarea-field-content form-field-content\">\n<div class=\"form-group\">\n   <label> Outdated User Accounts <\/label><br \/>\n   <textarea placeholder=\"Something will be typed here...\" rows=\"3\" disabled=\"disabled\" class=\"form-control\"><\/textarea>\n  <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"text-content\">\n<p>Storing old sites and users is both a <strong>security and legal risk<\/strong>.&nbsp;If you have had staff changes, client cancellations or other user changes, <strong>remove them from your system<\/strong> to help secure your server against unwanted entry.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"change-passwords\">\n<h2> Change passwords <\/h2>\n<div class=\"image-content\">\n<figure>\n   <a href=\"https:\/\/www.process.st\/templates\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/qnvei1sGIFdJD7PoAt5MpA.png\" alt=\"Change passwords\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.process.st\/templates\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/qnvei1sGIFdJD7PoAt5MpA.png\" \/> <\/a><br \/>\n  <\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"text-content\">\n<p>You're almost there! The second-to-last step in the server maintenance checklist is to <strong>change the passwords on your server, if necessary<\/strong>. Whether necessary or not, however, <strong>record the date of the last password changes<\/strong> in the <strong>form field<\/strong> below.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"date-field-content form-field-content\">\n<div class=\"form-group\">\n   <label> Last Server Password Changes <\/label> <\/p>\n<div class=\"date-container\">\n    <button type=\"button\" disabled=\"disabled\" class=\"btn btn-default\"> <i class=\"fa fa-calendar btn-icon\"><\/i> Date will be set here <\/button>\n   <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"text-content\">\n<p>Depending on when your passwords were last changed, this step may not be necessary. It's highly recommended to change passwords <strong>every 6 to 12 months<\/strong>, especially if you have given out passwords to others for maintenance purposes.<\/p>\n<p>As we previously stated, though, you should <strong>always record the date of the last password change<\/strong> (be it today or 3 months ago). This will help to <strong>remind you<\/strong> of how long it has been since the last change, and<strong> when the next one is due<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"check-system-security\">\n<h2> Check system security <\/h2>\n<div class=\"text-content\">\n<p>Finally, you need to<strong> review the server\u2019s security<\/strong> using a <strong>remote auditing tool<\/strong> such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tenable.com\/products\/nessus-vulnerability-scanner\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nessus<\/a>. <strong>Record<\/strong> a <strong>copy of the scan results<\/strong> with the <strong>form field<\/strong> below.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"file-field-content form-field-content\">\n<div class=\"form-group\">\n   <label> Server Security Scan Results <\/label> <\/p>\n<div class=\"file-container\">\n    <button type=\"button\" disabled=\"disabled\" class=\"btn btn-default\"> <i class=\"fa fa-upload btn-icon\"><\/i> File will be uploaded here <\/button>\n   <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"text-content\">\n<p>Regular security audits serve as a check on system configuration, OS updates and other potential security risks, and so it's vital that this step is carried out.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reference:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rackaid.com\/blog\/10-immutable-laws-of-security-administration-revisited\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">10 immutable laws of security administration<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Congratualtions!
