However, the impact of bias can go far deeper. There are many other ways bias affects people both in work and in other areas of life.<\/p>\n<h5>Undermined recruiting efforts<\/h5>\n<p>Unconscious biases get in the way of recruiting the right people in lieu of people you share common traits with. This is what's known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.futurelearn.com\/courses\/diversity-inclusion-awareness\/0\/steps\/39958\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">affinity bias<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h5><span>Disengagement from workers<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span>Studies show employees working at larger companies who perceive bias are <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2017\/08\/when-employees-think-the-boss-is-unfair-theyre-more-likely-to-disengage-and-leave\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">almost 3x<\/a> more likely to be disengaged at work. If an employee feels they aren't being given the same opportunities as their colleagues due to bias, they won't be as productive.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5>Higher employee turnover<\/h5>\n<p>Employees who perceive bias are more than <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2017\/08\/when-employees-think-the-boss-is-unfair-theyre-more-likely-to-disengage-and-leave\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">60% more likely<\/a> to search for other roles. This has multiple implications. Firstly, the person in question doesn't have job stability due to perceived bias. Secondly, if they do leave, this ultimately costs the company <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.shrm.org\/sites\/default\/files\/reports\/Retaining%20Talent-%20A%20Guide%20%28Q1%29.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">50%-60% of an annual salary<\/a> to find a direct replacement.<\/p>\n<h5>Diminished psychological safety<\/h5>\n<p>Psychological safety in the workplace is paramount; without it, employees can't do their best work. But without feeling like they're a part of a <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.impraise.com\/360-feedback\/what-is-psychological-safety-and-why-is-it-the-key-to-great-teamwork-performance-review\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">safe and inclusive environment<\/a> - which biases certainly impact - feelings of psychological safety will be diminished.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>Heavy emotional toll<\/h5>\n<p>Experiencing negative bias can have massive repercussions on a person's emotional state. People who perceive negative bias are <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2017\/08\/when-employees-think-the-boss-is-unfair-theyre-more-likely-to-disengage-and-leave\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2x more likely<\/a> to feel anger and sadness, according to studies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"seeing-from-different-perspectives\">\n<h2>Seeing from different perspectives:<\/h2>\n<div class=\"text-content\">\n<p class=\"style-info\">Seeing from the perspective of others is a fundamental part of shedding our biases. Not only does the LKM method, in particular, have positive benefits for the person practicing it, but also has benefits for how they see and feel toward other people. Research has shown that 7 minutes of meditation can reduce racial prejudice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style-blockquote\"><em>\"T<\/em><span><em>he researchers measured levels of positive emotions that were either 'other-regarding' (e.g. love, gratitude, awe, elevation) and those that were more self-directed (e.g. contentment, joy, pride) and found that people doing LKM showed large increases specifically in other-regarding emotions.
