It is also known as the Demming circle.<br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\">PDCA Cycle: An introduction<\/h5>\n<p>First introduced by <a href=\"https:\/\/kanbanize.com\/lean-management\/improvement\/what-is-pdca-cycle\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Walter Shewhart<\/a> and then developed on by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindtools.com\/pages\/article\/newPPM_89.htm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">W. Edwards Deming<\/a> in the 1950s, the model looks at change as a feature inbuilt in business, and an essential part for continuous improvement.<\/p>\n<p>There are four stages to the PDCA cycle:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Stage 1: <\/strong>Plan<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stage 2: <\/strong>Do<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stage 3:<\/strong> Check<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stage 4: <\/strong>Act<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The approach is iterative - that is, it is a cycle. Other terms of the PDCA cycle include the Deming circle, the Shewhart cycle, the control circle, or the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle.<\/p>\n<p>It is best to use the PDCA cycle when, as defined by <a href=\"https:\/\/asq.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ASQ<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Starting a new improvement project.<\/li>\n<li>Developing a new or improved design of a process, product, or service.<\/li>\n<li>Defining a repetitive work process.<\/li>\n<li>Planning data collection and analysis in order to verify and prioritize problems or root causes<\/li>\n<li>Implementing any change<\/li>\n<li>Working towards continuous improvement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\">What's good about it<\/h5>\n<p>The PDCA provides a simple and effective approach for solving problems and managing change. The model is best used for testing and improving measures on a small scale, before updating procedures and working methods.<\/p>\n<p>The model provides structure to experimental learning on testing changes.<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\">What's bad about it<\/h5>\n<p>The PDCA cycle can often result in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4789701\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> quick-and-dirty tests<\/a> of change. In this sense, the cycle must be used in caution.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, by putting everything in a step-by-step process, there is <a href=\"https:\/\/smallbusiness.chron.com\/weaknesses-deming-cycle-74907.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">little room for additional variables<\/a> that will undeniably crop up during a project.<\/p>\n<p>The cycle is often a slow process and therefore not well suited for emergencies. There is also the danger of paralysis by analysis - the project can get stuck too long at a given stage.<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\">How to use this checklist<\/h5>\n<p>At the beginning of this checklist, you will be <strong>presented with a set of specialized questions<\/strong> given as form fields.
