System noise<\/strong>  (or simply \"noise\") is the unwanted<\/strong> and unexpected variability<\/strong> in judgments<\/strong> that should, ideally, be identical. <\/p>\n

Noise is an especially crucial<\/strong> concern in lottery systems<\/strong> - such as court cases, insurance claim estimates, patient diagnoses, etc. - where individuals<\/strong> with the same qualifications and knowledge are randomly assigned<\/strong> to a specific case. <\/p>\n

Noisy judgments<\/strong> can be time-consuming<\/strong>, costly<\/strong>, and have severe impacts<\/strong> on individual lives as well as organization trajectories. <\/p>\n

Based on research by Daniel Kahneman<\/strong>, Olivier Sibony<\/strong>, and Cass R. Sunstein<\/strong>, this workflow will guide you through conducting a noise audit on your own team. <\/p>\n

As Kahneman, et al advise, ask yourself the following question before you begin:<\/p>\n

If the results of our simulation indicate a high level of noise, will people in the company accept that there is noise in the actual judgments of the unit?<\/strong><\/p>\n

If the answer<\/strong> to this question is anything but yes<\/strong>, the noise audit will be a waste of time<\/strong> and shouldn't be undertaken. <\/p>\n
