href=\"https:\/\/www.ubuntu.com\/download\/server\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">official Ubuntu download directory<\/a> and <strong>grab the latest version of Ubuntu Server.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"style-info\">There are a number of options available, and the right one will depend on your needs, but we recommend the long-term support (LTS) version of Ubuntu Server for the sake of stability and reliability.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"prepare-a-bootable-ubuntu-usb-on-a-windows-system\">\n<h2>Prepare a bootable Ubuntu USB on a Windows system<\/h2>\n<div class=\"text-content\">\n<p>Now that you have the ISO image, you need to <strong>prepare a USB stick for&nbsp;boot installation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On Windows, you can use <a href=\"https:\/\/rufus.akeo.ie\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Rufus<\/a> <span>to create USB installation media from bootable ISOs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Complete the sub-checklist below to get your USB order in Linux<\/h2>\n<div class=\"text-content\">\n<p>With the USB drive prepared it's time to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/askubuntu.com\/questions\/100232\/how-do-i-change-the-grub-boot-order\" rel=\"nofollow\">change the grub default boot entry<\/a> to force the system to load the Ubuntu Server installation image file.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This can be done from the&nbsp;terminal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gnu.org\/software\/grub\/manual\/grub\/grub.html#Simple-configuration\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">without having to install any additional tools<\/a>; however, it won't actually change the order in the list but it will allow a different OS to boot by default.<\/p>\n<p>First, <strong>make a backup copy of&nbsp;<code>\/etc\/default\/grub<\/code>.<\/strong> In case something goes wrong, you can easily revert to the known-good copy:<\/p>\n<pre><code>sudo cp \/etc\/default\/grub \/etc\/default\/grub.bak<\/code><code><\/code><\/pre>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"multi-select-content form-field-content\">\n<ul class=\"items\">\n<li class=\"item\">\n<div class=\"step-number-container\">\n<div class=\"step-number\">\n       1\n <\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"ubuntu-server-setup\">\n<h2>Ubuntu server setup:<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"unlock-the-root-user\">\n<h2>Unlock the root user<\/h2>\n<div class=\"text-content\">\n<p><strong>Open the terminal window&nbsp;<\/strong>and run the&nbsp;following command, inputting your&nbsp;<em>user&nbsp;<\/em>password when prompted:<\/p>\n<pre><span>sudo passwd root<\/span><\/pre>\n<p>You will then be prompted to create a new password for the root user account. Once you've entered that twice, <strong>type<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;this command<\/strong> into the terminal:<\/p>\n<pre>su -<\/pre>\n<p>and <strong>input your new password as requested.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You should now have access to the root account, and will be able to grant root privileges to newly created user accounts.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"create-a-new-user-account\">\n<h2>Create a new user account<\/h2>\n<div class=\"text-content\">\n<p>This new account will be granted with root powers privileges via<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tecmint.com\/sudoers-configurations-for-setting-sudo-in-linux\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sudo command<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>and will be used to perform administrative tasks in the system. Make sure you setup a strong password to protect this account. Follow the<span>&nbsp;<\/span><strong>adduser<\/strong><span>&nbsp;<\/span>prompt to setup the user details and password.<\/p>\n<pre>sudo adduser ubuntu_user<\/pre>\n<p>By default, as a security measure, the root account is completely disabled in Ubuntu. In order to create a new account on the system, log in to the system with the account user with root privileges and create a new account with the below command.<\/p>\n<p>For now, the new added user cannot perform administrative tasks via sudo utility. To grant this new user account with administrative privileges you should add the user to \u201c<strong>sudo<\/strong>\u201d system group by issuing the below command.<\/p>\n<pre>sudo usermod -a -G sudo ubuntu_user\n<\/pre>\n<p>By default, all users belonging to the \u201c<strong>sudo<\/strong>\u201d group are allowed to execute commands with root privileges via<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tecmint.com\/run-sudo-command-without-password-linux\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sudo utility<\/a>. Sudo command must be used before writing the command needed for execution, as shown in the below example.<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt install package_name\n<\/pre>\n<p>Test if the new user has the root privileges granted, by logging in to the system and run the<span>&nbsp;<\/span><strong>apt update&nbsp;<\/strong>command prefixed with sudo.<\/p>\n<pre>su - ubuntu_user\nsudo apt update<\/pre>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"give-the-new-account-root-privileges\">\n<h2>Give the new account root privileges<\/h2>\n<div class=\"text-content\">\n<p>Next it is a good idea to <strong>give the new account admin privileges<\/strong>. This essentially means that the new user will be able to enter commands with admin privileges by putting \"sudo\" before the command.<\/p>\n<p>As the <strong>root<\/strong> <strong>user<\/strong>, <strong>enter the following command<\/strong>, once again with <strong>\"username\" replaced<\/strong> with the name of the new user:<\/p>\n<pre>#&nbsp;gpasswd -a username sudo<\/pre>\n<p>This will save you a huge amount of time and effort in the long run, as you will now not have to log back into the root user account to perform administrative commands.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"linux-apache-mysql-php-lamp\">\n<h2>Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP (LAMP):<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"install-apache\">\n<h2>Install Apache<\/h2>\n<div class=\"image-content\">\n<figure>\n   <a href=\"https:\/\/www.process.st\/templates\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/hXsJU_Ew-6wZAEI-BhpKPQ.png\" alt=\"Install Apache\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.process.st\/templates\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/hXsJU_Ew-6wZAEI-BhpKPQ.png\"> <\/a><br \/>\n  <\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"text-content\">\n<p>We're getting somewhere! It's time to<strong> install the first of the web server softwares; Apache<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>There's a reason that Apache is the most popular web server in the world, and so it's time to join the ranks by installing Apache onto our server. Start off by entering the following <strong>commands<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt-get update\nsudo apt-get install apache2<\/pre>\n<p>You will be asked to <strong>verify your user's password<\/strong>, which you should obviously oblige with. Now do a <strong>spot check<\/strong> by <strong>entering the following address into your web browser<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<pre>http:\/\/your_server_IP_address<\/pre>\n<p>Once again \"<strong>your_server_IP_address<\/strong>\" should be <strong>replaced<\/strong> with the actual IP address, and if you see the<strong> default Ubuntu Apache web page (above)<\/strong>, then congratulations! The <strong>installation succeeded<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"install-mysql\">\n<h2>Install MySQL<\/h2>\n<div class=\"text-content\">\n<p>Now it's time to <strong>set up your server with a database management system<\/strong>, which is where MySQL comes in.<\/p>\n<p>Once again, you need to enter a <strong>command<\/strong> to get the installation going, this time being:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt-get install mysql-server php5-mysql<\/pre>\n<p>You will also need to <strong>select and confirm a password to be used for the MySQL root user<\/strong> - for obvious reasons, it shouldn't be the same password as your server's root user. This will essentially be a second root user account on the server, but it will be specific to MySQL.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"set-up-mysql\">\n<h2>Set up MySQL<\/h2>\n<div class=\"text-content\">\n<p>Now that it has been downloaded and installed, you need to enter some additional commands to <strong>set up the MySQL environment securely<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>First, you need to <strong>create a database directory structure<\/strong> where MySQL will store its information, and then <strong>run a security script<\/strong> to tighten up access. This can be achieved with the following <strong>commands<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo mysql_install_db<\/pre>\n<pre>sudo mysql_secure_installation<\/pre>\n<p><strong>Enter the password<\/strong> you just selected for your MySQL account and hit \"<strong>n<\/strong>\" to decline the offer to change it. <strong>All other prompts<\/strong> should be cycled through by hitting \"<strong>Enter<\/strong>\".<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"install-php\">\n<h2>Install PHP<\/h2>\n<div class=\"image-content\">\n<figure>\n   <a href=\"https:\/\/www.process.st\/templates\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/pAqZEHV7XvJr4xkOe_VLNQ.png\" alt=\"Install PHP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.process.st\/templates\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/pAqZEHV7XvJr4xkOe_VLNQ.png\"> <\/a><br \/>\n  <\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"text-content\">\n<p>You're on the final package of LAMP installation now; you need to <strong>install PHP<\/strong>. This will perform a number of incredibly useful&nbsp;tasks, such as processing code and passing it to your web server to display.<\/p>\n<p>You guessed it; time for more commands! Much like with the MySQL command, <strong>we've included some really nifty helper packages<\/strong>, so don't worry about setting up a server with limited resources.<\/p>\n<p>This time, the <strong>command<\/strong> is as follows:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt-get install php5 libapache2-mod-php5 php5-mcrypt<\/pre>\n<p>Whilst we're here, you also need to <strong>integrate PHP into the Apache server<\/strong> so that PHP files will be prioritized. To do this, first <strong>open \"dir.conf\" in your text editor<\/strong> with this <strong>command<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo nano \/etc\/apache2\/mods-enabled\/dir.conf<\/pre>\n<p>The resulting file should look like this:<\/p>\n<pre>&lt;IfModule mod_dir.c&gt;\n    DirectoryIndex index.html index.cgi index.pl <strong>index.php<\/strong> index.xhtml index.htm\n&lt;\/IfModule&gt;<\/pre>\n<p><strong>Edit<\/strong> the text so that the \"<strong>index.php<\/strong>\" file is the <strong>first in the queue<\/strong>, which will look like this:<\/p>\n<pre>&lt;IfModule mod_dir.c&gt;\n    DirectoryIndex <strong>index.php<\/strong> index.html index.cgi index.pl index.xhtml index.htm\n&lt;\/IfModule&gt;<\/pre>\n<p><strong>Save<\/strong> your changes and <strong>exit<\/strong> the editor (remember to also <strong>confirm the save<\/strong> once the document is closed).<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"restart-the-apache-server\">\n<h2>Restart the Apache server<\/h2>\n<div class=\"text-content\">\n<p>Due to the PHP configuration with your Apache server, you now need to <strong>restart the server<\/strong> to ensure that the changes take effect.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing convoluted or complicated in this step; all you need to do is enter this <strong>command<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo service apache2 restart<\/pre>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"install-any-optional-php-packages\">\n<h2>Install any optional PHP packages<\/h2>\n<div class=\"text-content\">\n<p>PHP is installed and ready to use; the next step is to take a look at the<strong> additional PHP modules<\/strong> and<strong> install any that take your fancy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>To start off, you'll need a <strong>list of all of the optional components for PHP <\/strong>which you can install. You can get this up by entering (surprise, surprise) the following <strong>command<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<pre>apt-cache search php5-<\/pre>\n<p>The list returned to you will include all of the modules' names and a brief description. <strong>Use this command to focus down on a particular <\/strong>component:<\/p>\n<pre>apt-cache show package_name<\/pre>\n<p>You will need to <strong>replace \"package_name\"<\/strong> with the name of the package you want to examine, such as \"php5-cli\". Amongst the mass of data returned to you when examining a component, the <strong>in-depth description will appear under the \"Description-en\" field<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>If, after doing a little research you want to <strong>install<\/strong> a&nbsp;module, enter the following <strong>command<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt-get install package1<\/pre>\n<p><strong>Replace&nbsp;\"package1\"<\/strong> with the name of the module you wish to install, and if you want to install multiple, just put a space between each module
